Pier 54 in Manhattan was the arrival destination for the surviving passengers of the Titanic. It is now part of the Hudson River Park. Plans to restore the pier have never come to fruition so it remains standing with the barely legible lettering: “Cunard White Star”.
This is a 5" x 7" encaustic on board, with embossing powder and toner transfer.
Encaustic paintings are created using a mixture of beeswax, oil paint and damar varnish. This "paint" is heated, brushed onto a board and fused with a torch, layer by layer. The wax creates a lustrous surface unique to encaustic pieces.
